The Rococo Art Movement

Rococo, also known as Late Baroque, is an exceptionally ornamental and dramatic style of architecture, art and decoration which combines asymmetry, scrolling curves, gilding, white and pastel colours, sculpted moulding, and trompe-l'œil frescoes to create surprise and the illusion of motion and drama. It is often described as the final expression of the Baroque movement.

Origins

The Rococo style began in France in the 1730s as a reaction against the more formal and geometric Louis XIV style. It was known as the "style Rocaille", or "Rocaille style". It soon spread to other parts of Europe, particularly northern Italy, Austria, southern Germany, Central Europe and Russia.

Characteristics

Rococo features exuberant decoration, with an abundance of curves, counter-curves, undulations and elements modeled on nature. The exteriors of Rococo buildings are often simple, while the interiors are entirely dominated by their ornament. The style was highly theatrical, designed to impress and awe at first sight.

Rococo Painting

Rococo painting represents the expression in painting of an aesthetic movement that flourished in Europe between the early and late 18th century. It is divided into two sharply differentiated camps: one forms an intimate, carefree visual document of the way of life and worldview of the eighteenth-century European elites, and the other, adapting constituent elements of the style to the monumental decoration of churches and palaces, served as a means of glorifying faith and civil power.

Notable Rococo Artists

Some notable Rococo artists include Jean Baptiste Pillement, Rosalba Carriera, Jean Étienne Liotard, François Boucher, and Joshua Reynolds.

Museums with Rococo Art Collections

Some museums with notable Rococo art collections include the Art Institute of Chicago and the Schloss Sanssouci Museum in Potsdam, Germany.
