Dadaism, also known as Dada, was an informal international art movement that began in the early 20th century. The movement was a reaction to World War I and the cultural and intellectual conformity that corresponded to the war. Dadaists rejected the logic, reason, and aestheticism of modern capitalist society, instead expressing nonsense, irrationality, and anti-bourgeois protest in their works.
History
The beginnings of Dada correspond with the outbreak of World War I. For many participants, the movement was a protest against the bourgeois nationalist and colonialist interests that they believed were the root cause of the war. The first public Dada gathering took place on July 14, 1916, at Zur Waag guildhall in Zürich, Switzerland. This date, Bastille Day, was chosen as a protest to World War I.
Ideals
Dadaism was characterized by its rejection of the traditional art establishment and its embrace of chaos and irrationality. The movement's ideals were first collected in Hugo Ball's Dada Manifesto in 1916. In this manifesto, Ball asserts that "Dada is the heart of words." He concludes his manifesto with a linguistic explosion that alternates between coherence and absurdity.

Key figures in the Dada movement included Jean Arp, Johannes Baader, Hugo Ball, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, George Grosz, Raoul Hausmann, John Heartfield, Emmy Hennings, Hannah Höch, Richard Huelsenbeck, Francis Picabia, Man Ray, Hans Richter, Kurt Schwitters, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Tristan Tzara, and Beatrice Wood.
Influence
The Dada movement influenced later styles like the avant-garde and downtown music movements, and groups including Surrealism, nouveau réalisme, pop art, and Fluxus. The movement's emphasis on chaos and irrationality can be seen in many contemporary art forms.
