Introduction

The Lady with an Ermine is a portrait painting widely attributed to the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. It was painted in oils on a panel of walnut wood and dates back to c. 1489-1491. The subject of the painting is Cecilia Gallerani, who was a mistress of Ludovico Sforza ("Il Moro"), Duke of Milan. Leonardo da Vinci painted this portrait while he was in the service of the Duke.

Description

The Lady with an Ermine is one of only four surviving portraits of women painted by Leonardo, the others being Ginevra de' Benci, La Belle Ferronnière and the Mona Lisa. The painting depicts a half-height woman turned toward her right at a three-quarter angle, but with her face turned toward her left. The animal in her arms twists in a similar manner, resulting in considerable contrapposto with the lady.

Symbolism

The ermine in the painting is not just an animal; it is a symbol with meanings related to the subject of the portrait and its patron. The ermine represents purity, innocence, and royalty. It also stands for the virtue of chastity, which was highly valued during the Renaissance period.

Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) was an Italian polymath who is widely regarded as one of the greatest painters of all time. He was a painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. His genius, perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal.
